Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
A prison during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970’s, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum tells the story of the atrocities committed during this tragic period. Formerly a high school, Tuol Sleng is located in the urban center of Phnom Penh with dozens of classrooms turned prison cells turned museum displays that show how horrific of a place it truly was in hopes that it may be avoided in the future. Although a very difficult place to visit, Tuol Sleng is a must when in Phnom Penh.
Plan to take plenty of time to visit the museum as it can be very difficult to see. Stop in at the small stupa in the final room (across the courtyard from the entrance) to pay respect to those who were imprisoned or died here.
