Mexico City:
Barrio Hopping & Cantina Culture

5 days discovering MEXICO'S VIBRANT CAPITAL CITY
< Designed Trips

The Trip

Hola, Mexico City! Located 7,500 feet high in the valley of Mexico, this vibrant metropolis is a sprawling canvas of art, culture, and some of the best food on the planet. While the city is massive, CDMX is deeply neighborhood-based. Each barrio has its own distinct soul, and this 5-day trip is designed to slow down and dive into the very best of them. The adventure kicks off on two wheels, cycling through the lush, tree-lined avenues of Roma Norte and La Condesa, stopping at local juguerías for fresh juices and learning exactly how to order fresh tortillas right off the grill. From there, your trip continues with either a deep-dive food tour through the historic center, or an optional day trip out of the city to witness the towering ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán. Spend your final day walking the cobblestone streets of Coyoacán, before stepping inside Frida Kahlo’s famous Casa Azul (Blue House) to see how she transformed a life of pain into some of the world's most vibrant art and poetry. Between the colorful markets, historic plazas, and hidden architectural gems, this trip promises full bellies and a profound appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of the locals. Get ready to eat a ridiculous number of tacos, soak up the inspiring design, and experience the magnetic energy of CDMX!

The Itinerary

  • Day 1: Bienvenidos a México! Upon your arrival at Mexico City International Airport, a private driver will pick you up and bring you to your boutique hotel in the heart of one of the city’s most charming local neighborhoods. Check in, get settled, and head out to explore your tree-lined barrio, packed with lively cafes and colorful boutiques. Find a corner spot for some street tacos and fresh juice… or margaritas! Your city adventure has officially begun.

  • Day 2: Rise and shine to the buzz of the city. Mexico City (or CDMX, as it’s known) has a vibrant coffee culture, so grab a quick cup before heading out on your biking adventure. Today you’ll explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Roma Norte and La Condesa on two wheels. Stop at an authentic Tortilleria to try tortillas hot off the grill, explore a local market and jugueria for fresh juice, and try some of the city’s best tacos and tlacoyos. Stroll through Parque México, soaking up the energy of the city's runners, walkers, and bright plazas. In the evening, either sit down to a refined dinner at one of the city’s incredible fine-dining restaurants or opt for more tacos and aguas frescas - there is no wrong choice here.

  • Day 3: Wake up to another day of adventure and exploration. Today, you have options: Choose to head out of the city for a day trip to Teotihuacán to witness the towering, pre-Columbian Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, discovering the incredible history of this stunning Aztecan archaeological site from your expert guide. Alternatively, stay in the city for a deep-dive walking food tour around the bustling, working class Centro Histórico, where you’ll taste an array of local recipes while learning about local ways of life in CDMX. In the evening, explore the city's historic cantina culture and hop around local bars.

  • Day 4: Sleep in after a fun night before heading to the charming, bohemian neighborhood of Coyoacán for a visit to Frida Kahlo’s famous Casa Azul (Blue House). See firsthand how she transformed a life of pain and darkness into some of the world's most recognized art and poetry. Afterward, stop at Mercado 89 for a quick bite before strolling through the beautiful Plaza Coyoacán. This colorful, artistic area is filled with historic cobblestone streets, hidden local plazas, and vibrant markets. Get lost in the streets, soaking up the inspiring design, and lively street scene - often with music and dancing in the neighborhood’s tree-lined plazas.

  • Day 5: Grab your last local coffee (and maybe a breakfast taco!) before your private driver picks you up from your hotel to head to the airport. You’ll leave with sore feet, full bellies, and lots of memories.  Or, choose to add another day to stroll through one of the city’s incredible museums or catch a Lucha Libre match - the choice is yours!

Mexico City FAQs

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MEXICO CITY?
The capital city has a mild climate year-round, but generally the dry season of Mid-October through April is the best time to visit for predictable weather and easy exploration.
HOW DO I GET AROUND?
Uber is readily available and affordable, or hop on the Metrobús to beat traffic during rush hour. Neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, and Centro Histórico are best explored on foot.
IS IT SAFE?
Mexico City is one of the most visited destinations in Mexico and is safe (and accustomed) to foreign tourists. Though like any major  metropolis, sticking to well-traveled neighborhoods and a strong awareness of your surroundings is advised.
HOw DO I FEEL MY BEST IN MEXICO CITY?
Mexico City sits at a sneaky high altitude of 7,350 feet, so be sure to drink a lot of water, expecially within the fist 24-48 hours of arriving while your body adjusts. As a general practice, wash your hands and eat from clean food vendors who are serving fresh, hot food.

FAQs

WHAT IS A DESIGNED TRIP?
A Designed Trip is a pre-designed travel plan based on our personal, first-hand travel experiences in each destination. As they are pre-designed, our Designed Trips have been created as a turnkey travel option and can be booked and delivered in as little as one week.
CAN I MAKE ANY CHANGES TO A DESIGNED TRIP?
Absolutely! Pre-designed doesn’t mean there isn’t any flexibility. Whether you want to shorten or lengthen your trip, switch out a destination or change an activity, let us know. If, however, you want a trip built around your specific desires, a Custom Trip might be more appropriate. We can help you decide, so get in touch.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?
Once you’ve selected your Designed Trip and chosen between a Boutique, Luxury Boutique or Luxury experience, your trip can be booked and delivered in as little as one week. If you would like to make some changes to your trip, such as including an alternative activity, shortening or lengthening your trip, then this can take a bit longer.
HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH MY DESIGNED TRIP WILL COST?
Once you have decided on your Designed Trip, your dates, and any adjustments we will provide a personalized itinerary and pricing for your trip. We have included base pricing on each Designed Trip page to give you an idea as to what the final cost might be, but prices can fluctuate depending on time of year and any personalization. Get in touch and we can help.
If you have any other questions, feel free to check out more FAQs or send us an email.
