Romance & Renaissance

12 Days in LAKE COMO, FLORENCE, CHIANTI & THE AMALFI COAST (with optional add-on to ROME)
< Designed Trips

The Trip

Experience the essence of ‘La dolce vita’ with this romantic Designed Trip from the north to the south of Italy. Visit one of the world’s most famous lakes, marvel at Renaissance masterpieces, watch the sun set over vineyard-covered hills, and dive into turquoise seas. Your trip begins at Lake Como where you will see the grand villas of celebrities and diplomats from your Venetian-style wooden boat. Next up, Tuscany, to the birthplace of the Renaissance, where you'll stroll the cobbled streets, make fresh pasta with a Michelin-starred chef, and see some of the world’s most famous art, including Michelangelo’s David. Continue on to the vineyard-covered rolling hills of Chianti to taste some of Italy’s finest wines, hunt for truffles and learn about the production of extra virgin olive oil. Continuing south, to the stunning Amalfi Coast, you'll hop on a boat to “the jewel of Naples”, Capri, and spend your afternoons on pebble beaches sipping limoncello. Either choose to end your trip here, or add an additional 3 days in Rome where you’ll see the Eternal City’s most impressive sights, visit the Colosseum, and discover the best Roman bites on a food tour of the city’s hidden eateries.

The Itinerary

Lake Como
  • Day 1: Benvenuti in Italia - welcome to Italy! After collecting your luggage, relax as you travel north about 1 hour, 30 minutes, to the gorgeous Lake Como and your historic boutique hotel. Trditionally Italy’s playground for celebrities and diplomats, the shores of Lake Como are home to grand villas with private boats and quaint, colorful villages. Check in, pop the prosecco and relax. Your trip has just begun.
  • Day 2: Wake up beside one of the world’s most famous lakes. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and your first Italian cappuccino before meeting your captain for a small-group boat tour of the lake. From a traditional Venetian-style wood boat, admire the historic villas and picturesque towns, and discover the beautiful locations featured in the movies, including Star Wars and Casino Royale. The afternoon is yours to relax or explore.
  • Day 3: Buongiorno! Today is free to do what feels right. Maybe take a long, relaxed breakfast before heading out to explore the lake’s quaint towns, extraordinary villas and manicured gardens. Grab a water taxi or hop on a ferry to Varrena, Bellagio or Menaggio; explore the grand Villa Carlotta, Villa Monastero or Villa Melzi d’Eril; or browse the shops in what is widely regarded as one of the best places in Europe to buy silk.

Florence
  • Day 4: Hop on a high-speed train for the 2 hour trip south to magical Florence. Check in to your boutique hotel and wander the city’s ancient cobbled streets. In the afternoon, you have the option to test your culinary skills with a fresh pasta-making class at a small cooking school started by some of Florence’s award-winning young chefs. Learn how to prepare dishes that have been passed down from the chef’s grandmothers and served at Michelin-starred restaurants, including tortelli, tagliatelle and fettuccine, as well as various sauces. Alternatively, spend some free time exploring the city at your own pace.
  • Day 5: You’ll only need a light breakfast today as you'll be spending the morning touring Florence’s best markets and eateries with a local guide. Get deeper into Florentine history and culture as you taste local delicacies and stroll the backstreets in search of hidden local spots. In the afternoon, you have the option to dive in to the city’s incredible artistic history with either a private tour of the Accademia Gallery (home to to Michelangelo’s David); tickets to the Uffizi gallery to see Renaissance masterpieces by Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Rembrandt; or a visit to Cattedrale di Santa Maria dei Fiori and it’s jaw-dropping Duomo, designed by Brunelleschi.

Chianti
  • Day 6: Head to Santa Maria Novella train station to collect your rental car. It’s time to hit the scenic roads of the Tuscan countryside, along the vineyard-covered rolling hills of one of Italy’s most beautiful wine regions: Chianti. You have the option of stopping off at a vineyard for lunch and a wine tasting before arriving to your boutique hotel. Once you’re all checked in, the rest of the evening is free to relax and unwind. Open a bottle of Chianti Classico and watch the sunset over the vineyards.
  • Day 7: Wake up in the rolling hills of the Chianti region. This area is all about embracing La Dolce Vita - good wine, good food, slow pace and amazing views. You’ll get to experience every one of those today as you join a full-day wine and olive oil tour. First, visit one of the region’s small medieval hilltop towns before stopping at a family-owned olive mill. Learn about the production of Tuscan extra virgin olive oil before moving on to a small winery for a farm-to-table Tuscan lunch and wine tasting. In the late afternoon, go for a walk in the hills before settling into a relaxed dinner.
  • Day 8: Rise and shine! Today is yours to explore - you have that rental car, after all - but one option could be an early morning truffle hunt and cooking class. Meet a local truffle hunter and his trained dogs for a walk through the forest, learning the secret to finding delicious Tuscan black truffles. After, visit an organic farm where you’ll be introduced to the techniques of Tuscany’s cucina rustica (rustic cuisine), preparing a variety of traditional dishes and pastas using black truffles. Alternatively, choose to visit the historic winery and castle of Castello di Brolio, or head out to the beautiful hilltop towns of San Gimignano, Panzano or Radda.

The Amalfi Coast
  • Day 9: After a frothy cappuccino, hop in your car and drive back to Florence before taking a high-speed train 3 hours south to Naples, your gateway to The Amalfi Coast. Your private driver will be waiting for you, ready to whisk you away to your boutique hotel. On the way, you have the option to make a stop at a winery at the base of Mt. Vesuvius for wine tasting and lunch before continuing on to the stunning Amalfi Coast. Check in, relax, and take in the view.
  • Day 10: Rise and shine! You can’t visit the Amalfi Coast without a boat trip. Either take the coastal route, or head to the gorgeous island of Capri, often called “the jewel of Naples”. Cruise of the coastline and discover some of the natural landmarks that make this area so famous, before stopping to dive into the turquoise sea! Back on the mainland, grab a glass of wine and breathe in the sunset before a relaxed dinner.
  • Day 11: Today is all about  enjoying one of the most famous coastlines in the world. You’re free to do whatever you choose. Maybe head into Positano to explore the famous terraced village, or swing by Fornillo Beach to experience the Italian beach club scene. Enjoy the day doing whatever feels right to you in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
  • Day 12: Wake up, drink a cappuccino and enjoy a delicious breakfast. It’s your final day. Either talk to us about extending your trip with a 3-day visit to Rome, or hop on the plane for your flight home.

Optional Add-On: Rome
  • Day 12: If you choose to extend your trip, then a driver will pick you up and take you to the Naples Station for a quick, high-speed train for Rome. After checking into your boutique hotel in the city’s historic center, meet up with a private guide for an introduction to some of Rome’s best sights from a local perspective.
  • Day 13: Enjoy a relaxed morning before meeting your local guide to taste your way around the city on a food tour, sampling everything from ricotta pie, to pizza, to gelato and Roman Suppli. In the afternoon, explore Rome’s hidden squares and boutique shops, or visit one of the city's fantastic museums.
  • Day 14: On your last full day in wondrous Roma, head to the Colosseum to explore the heart of the Ancient Roman Empire.
  • Day 15: Enjoy your final Italian coffee and savor the morning. Your private driver will pick you up and take you to the airport for your flight home.
