Belize: From The Rainforest
to The Reef

8 days adventuring through Ambergris Caye and San Ignacio
< Designed Trips

The Trip

This ultimate Belize adventure takes travelers from reef to jungle, from white sand beaches to hidden caves, and from snorkeling and sailing to ancient temple exploration. The trip starts on laid back and relaxed Ambergris Caye, a long and narrow island just a half mile west of the incredible Belize Barrier Reef. Snorkel the world’s second largest reef, spotting sea turtles, stingrays, and nurse sharks, sail to nearby Caye Caulker, and explore the island’s culinary diversity, tasting everything from aromatic Maya dishes to the Belizean staple, fluffy Fry Jacks. Touch down in San Ignacio, in the middle of the lush Belizean jungle, for the second half of the trip. Discover one of the great wonders of the world, the ancient Maya archaeological site of Tikal in nearby Guatemala. After that you’ll choose to swim and hike through the unbelievable Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, famous for its preserved artifacts of Mayan sacrifice or float innertubes on underground rivers and through spectacular caves. From start to end, it’s a two-part adventure that reveals the spectacular natural and cultural wonders of beautiful Belize!

The Itinerary

Ambergris Caye
  • Day 1: Arrive in Belize City and hop on a short, but inspiring, “puddle jumper” flight to nearby Ambergris Caye. You’ll be greeted at the island’s little airport with your golf cart rental for the next four days, then cruise over to your beach side resort (see below).
  • Day 2: Set off on a full-day sailing and snorkeling tour, exploring the Belize Barrier Reef at the incredible Hol Chan Marine Park, where vibrant fish, sea turtles, and corals thrive. You’ll swim in shallow waters, alongside nurse sharks and stingrays before heading to ultra laid back Caye Caulker for a 2-hour visit. Enjoy the afternoon breeze with a glass of rum punch in hand as you sail back to Ambergris Caye.
  • Day 3: Today is a day full of beach relaxation or island exploration, followed by a local Belizean culinary tour for dinner. Meet a small group and your local guide in San Pedro Town, where you’ll taste the awesome diversity of foods that the island has to offer, with everything from traditional Maya dishes to tasty Belizean staples.
  • Day 4: Start with a hearty breakfast before heading out to the beach for a day of rest and relaxation. Wade in the crystal clear waters off the coast of Ambergris Caye, then take the rest of the day to explore spectacular Secret Beach. Head in to San Pedro town for dinner at one of the town's many excellent restaurants.

San Ignacio
  • Day 5: In the morning, drive your golf cart back to the San Pedro Airport where you’ll hop on another short “Puddle jumper” flight (one-stop) to San Ignacio. Upon landing in the jungle, you’ll be picked up and driven to your boutique jungle lodge, just a hop, skip, and jump out of San Ignacio Town. Spend the rest of the day on one of the lodge’s canoes, discovering their tropical farms, or make the short trip to Xunantunich, where you’ll find ancient Maya temples, just a short trip outside of town.
  • Day 6: For your first full day in the jungle you’ll be picked up early in the morning for a day long adventure into Guatemala, where you’ll climb to the top of the ancient Maya temples and discover the incredible archaeological site of Tikal.
  • Day 7: Today, choose between two immersive experiences in the jungle of Belize. Join an adventurous, hike, swim, and climb tour through the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, famous for its preserved human skeleton of a teenage girl from a Mayan sacrifice. *Alternatively, tube through the amazing Barton Caves before exploring Big Rock Falls. The choice is yours!
  • Day 8: After breakfast a private car will pick you up on your final morning in Belize, taking you directly to the airport in Belize City where you’ll catch a flight to your next destination, wherever that may be!
