Isla Holbox: Mexico’s Hidden
Slice of Paradise

6 days discovering mexico's quiet island escape
< Designed Trips

The Trip

Just 26 miles long and one mile wide, with less than 2,000 residents, Isla Holbox (pronounced ‘ole-bosh) is the Yucatan’s quiet little slice of paradise. As part of the Yum Balam Reserve, the island is protected by a federal designation that ensures all buildings are less than 40 feet high. But it’s catching on, and with an increase in visitors year-over-year, locals are doing their best to maintain the small island feel. Our 6-day relaxed island experience celebrates the chill island vibes and laid-back culture, making for an amazing and quick warm weather getaway. Unwind on the beach with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets over the Caribbean, snorkel, swim, and fish in beautiful Cabo Catoche, discover the island's unique street art scene, and learn how to prepare authentic regional cuisine during a Mexican cooking class. Practice your SUP skills on the glassy Caribbean sea and kayak through bioluminescent waters when you're not laying by the pool or relaxing on the beach. Enjoy the warm Mexican sun and relaxed energy, but definitely don’t spread the word…

The Itinerary

  • Day 1: Grab your passport, pack your flip flops and leave your jacket behind… you’re headed to Mexico! Upon your arrival at Cancun International Airport, a private car will pick you up and take you to the ferry where you’ll cross the channel to Isla Holbox. Check in to your boutique beachfront hotel, drink a cocktail, and head to the dock to watch pelicans swoop and fishing boats bob as the sky lights up over the turquoise sea.
  • Day 2: Rise and shine for a day out on the water. After breakfast at your hotel, meet your captain for a boat tour of Cabo Catoche Cape, 26 miles east of Holbox where the Caribbean sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. Snorkel, fish and relax on a hidden white sand beach where the captain will prepare a delicious ceviche. After docking back in Holbox, take the rest of the day to explore town or hang at the beach. Choose between a casual local joint or a nice sit-down spot for dinner before calling it a night.
  • Day 3: The morning is free to either chill at the beach or explore the incredible murals around town that have been painted during the island’s annual festival by artists from across the world. In the evening, walk over to La Puerta Rosa for a traditional Mexican cooking class where (for dinner) you’ll learn how to prepare various authentic dishes during an authentic, immersive and fun culinary experience.
  • Day 4: Sleep in and enjoy breakfast outside to the sound of waves gently lapping on to the shore. Pick up your reserved stand up paddle boards from the shop just down the beach for two hours of paddling along the glassy coastal waters. SUP is a surprise workout, so indulge in a big lunch before taking the rest of the day to do whatever feels right. In the evening, grab a beer and a hammock to take in the spectacular island sunset. Make the near impossible decision of tacos, burritos, or ceviche, along with a tasty margarita and live music before turning in.
  • Day 5: It’s your final full day. Enjoy the feeling of having nothing to do and sleep as late as you’d like. Jump in a hammock by the beach or take a dip in the pool while you soak up the Caribbean sun. In the late afternoon, enjoy happy hour and an early dinner out. After the sun goes down, enjoy an evening kayak tour to experience the famous bioluminescent waters along the Holbox coastline, as well as nighttime star gazing. Back on shore, grab after-dinner churros in the plaza or head out for a cocktail.
  • Day 6: Rise and shine early and eat a big breakfast. You’ll be picked up at your hotel for your ferry and private transfer back to the Cancun airport.
