Maui: The Very Best of The Valley Isle

7 days exploring the beautiful valley isle
< Designed Trips

The Trip

Maui has it all. From the towering peak of Haleakala, to the farms and fruit stands upcountry. From the lush rainforests of the island’s east side, to the long sandy beaches of the west and south coasts. It’s no wonder the Valley Isle is continuously named the best island in the U.S. year after year. Your Maui adventure starts with a unique sail and snorkel trip to a less-visited marine preserve off the coast of the less-visited neighbor island of Lana'i. Next, head upcountry to the slopes of Haleakala for a harvest and gourmet lunch at a natural farm. No trip to Maui would be complete without a drive along the magical Hana Highway, complete with our personal independent guide to the best waterfalls, hikes and beaches along the way. Back on the sunny south side, learn to navigate the ocean on a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe. Spend each day searching for humpback whales, hiking through the jungle, swimming with sea turtles and jumping in waterfalls before watching the sun dip in to the Pacific with a mai tai in hand.

The Itinerary

  • Day 1: E komo mai (welcome) to the island of Maui, Hawai'i’s second largest island. Nicknamed The Valley Island, for the large uninhabited valley that spans between the West Maui mountains and Haleakala, the giant 10,000+ foot dormant volcano. Breathe in the warm air and grab your luggage before picking up your rental car for the week. Drive across the valley to Highway 30 - aka The Pali - which hugs the ocean all the way up the coast to West Maui: the towns of Lahaina, Ka'anapali, Kapalua and Napili. Check in to your beach side resort, then head to the beach or pool for some well deserved R&R. (You can also choose to stay on the south side of the island in pretty & posh Wailea - see below for options.)
  • Day 2: Wake up bright and early for a day of sailing to the neighboring island of Lana'i. Join a long-time local sailing outfitter for an epic day of swimming and snorkeling in Hulopo’e Marine Preserve off the coast of Lana'i (where your outfitter has exclusive permission to sail). Join a guided cultural experience, play volleyball, and relax on the beach before enjoying a plantation barbecue lunch at Hale O'Manele. Snack on ice cream or sip a cocktail during the return sail to Maui’s west side, taking the remainder of the day to relax at your resort or discover more of the island.
  • Day 3: Rise and shine! Today is your day to explore upcountry Maui. This amazing region, on the slopes of Haleakala, is home to ten different micro-climates, from dense forest to tropical rainforest, to dry and sunny slopes that offer perfect growing conditions for fruit, vegetables and herbs. Begin your day by going all the way to the top, to Haleakala National Park, taking some time to hike along one of the many park trails. After working up an appetite, head to nearby O’o Farm in the misty forest of Waipoli. This natural, 8.5 acre farm sits at an elevation of 3500 feet, with breathtaking views of the valley below. Meet the local farmers and help harvest vegetables before sitting down to a gourmet lunch of fresh and natural ingredients. Following lunch, continue to explore the many upcountry producers (cheese, spirits, and pineapples) and the Hawaiian cowboy town of Makawao. Your Cohica Designed Trip comes with a curated Maui Mini-Guide, full of our personal recommendations of what to see and do, as well as our favorite restaurants on Maui.
  • Day 4: Aloha kakahiaka (good morning!). Wake up in paradise. Today is a free day to do whatever feels right. Grab snorkel masks and head to the ocean for incredible snorkeling right off the shore, or relax on the crescent-shaped beach. In the late afternoon, head to happy hour and get ready to watch the sky light up with colors in a classic Maui sunset.
  • Day 5: Today it’s time for an adventure... the famous Road to Hana. They say that it's more about the journey than the destination and in this case,it's turn. This incredible 2-lane road winds along the coast of northeast Maui, through lush jungle, past flowing waterfalls and across one-lane bridges. Drive through Kahului to Paia, past farm stands with smoothies and banana bread, continuing on Hana Highway north to Ho’okipa, a popular north shore surf break. (If surf's up, you may want to stop to see kiters and surfers take on the big north shore waves!). Using our guide to the best Hana Highway stops, continue on the curvy road as far as you'd like. If you make it all the way to Hana, take in amazing black and red sand beaches, natural pools and giant waterfalls. Grab a bite to eat or enjoy a picnic before winding back to your hotel.
  • Day 6: Wake up bright and early for an exciting day on the south side. Jump in the car and head to Makena, where you’ll join a small group for a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe trip in the calm morning waters. Your certified marine naturalist guide will provide insights into Hawaiian culture as you glide across the turquoise blue ocean, stopping to snorkel in a quiet location, away from the other snorkel boats and tourist masses. After your epic paddle, hit one of the beaches of Makena or Wailea and soak up the sun. In the afternoon, visit Maui Brewing Company for a short tour* of the incredibly popular, award-winning local craft brewery. Learn how they’ve used locally grown ingredients to brew delicious beer like Pineapple Mana Wheat, Coconut Hiwa Porter, and Big Swell IPA.
  • Day 7: It’s your final day, either talk to us about extending your trip (a few days on one of the other islands would be a great addition!), or head to the airport for your flight home.
